Risk prevention
Preparing for an insurer's risk survey
The survey report directly affects your premium, deductibles and conditions. Good preparation means you are assessed fairly.

Before insuring a high-value factory, warehouse or project, insurers and reinsurers usually send an engineer to survey it. The report shapes how they see your risk, and therefore your premium, deductibles and mandatory recommendations.
What surveyors look at
- Construction, separation and fire compartments
- Fire detection and suppression systems and their maintenance
- Storage layout, especially clearance to sprinkler heads and lighting
- Control of hot work, electrical repairs and contractors on site
- Location relative to flood and windstorm exposure
- Dependence on critical equipment or suppliers
Documents to have ready
- Site layout and approved fire protection drawings
- Fire inspection reports and system maintenance logs
- Asset list and values
- Incident history for recent years
Small things that make a big difference
- Keep exits and access to fire equipment clear.
- Check extinguisher inspection dates and the condition of valves and fire pumps.
- Clear waste, pallets and combustible material.
- Have someone who knows the operation available to answer questions.
After the survey
If the report makes recommendations, respond with an action plan and dates. A clear improvement plan usually helps negotiate better terms at renewal, even before every item is complete.
